Johannes (went by John) Rothrock Sr. was the third (he was a twin) of fifteen known children of Phillip Jacob Rothrock (1713-1803) and Catharina Kuntz Rothrock (1720-1777), who married 22 Mar 1740 in Pennsylvania, probably York County.

John lived his entire life in York County, Pennsylvania. He was a well-to-do printer, farmer and saddler. He served as a 1st Lieutenant in the York Militia in 1777 and later.

John was first married to Dorothea Gump (1749-1775) on 01 May 1767 at York County, Pennsylvania (or at Cumberland County, Pennsylvania on 06 May1767?). John and Dorothea were the parents of four known children, namely:

1. George Rothrock (1768-1768)
2. Johannes (John) Rothrock Jr. (1769-1815)
3. Daniel Rothrock (1771-1839)
4. Catharina Rothrock (1774-1786)

After Dorothea died, John remarried to Salome Charity Worley (1759-1828) on 05 Nov 1776 at York, York County, Pennsylvania. John and Dorothea were the parents of thirteen known children, namely:
