Duke was born in Oklahoma to Robert and Nina Heffern and moved to California in 1934. At 17, he enlisted in the 2nd Div, Bn 300 of the 154th Combat Engineers. A demolitions expert, he fought on Peleliu and at Guadalcanal. Discharged in 1946, he worked 36 years at AT&T, retiring in 1982.
Duke's greatest passion was love of his family and friends; he was a giver and always willing to help anyone in need. He went to the Lord suddenly from a heart attack after 15 years of ill health. His wife, Marion, predeceased him in 1997.
He is survived by his children Cathy, Helena, and Gary, three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
