Robert Milling Bell, the eldest son of William Montgomery Bell and the former Margaret Nason Milling, was born 1833 in the Fairfield District of Salem Crossroads, South Carolina. He was named for his maternal grandfather, Robert Milling. Soon after Robert's birth, his parents emigrated west with other family members settling around Starkville, Mississippi. Over the next few years, Robert would have seven brothers and sisters.
In 1861, Robert married Mary Elizabeth McCall. He shortly enlisted in the Fourteenth Mississippi Infantry Regiment that mustered at Corinth, Mississippi on May 27, 1861. This gallant Mississippi Regiment was at the Battle of Fort Donelson (Tenn.), February 15, 1862, where Robert Milling Bell was mortally wounded. His body was buried on the battlefield.
His young wife, Bettie, as she was known, married George W. Smith on April 8th 1869 and had five known children; dying in 1928 in Starkville.
