In 1861, Robert married Mary Elizabeth McCall. He shortly enlisted in the Fourteenth Mississippi Infantry Regiment that mustered at Corinth, Mississippi on May 27, 1861. This gallant Mississippi Regiment was at the Battle of Fort Donelson (Tenn.), February 15, 1862, where Robert Milling Bell was mortally wounded. His body was buried on the battlefield.
His young wife, Bettie, as she was known, married George W. Smith on April 8th 1869 and had five known children; dying in 1928 in Starkville.

"Robert Milling Bell, age 29 of Starkville, was killed in action in April 1862 at Fort Donelson Tennessee. Robert was a Private in Company C, 14th Mississippi Infantry Regiment. He leaves a wife, Betty McCall. Robert is buried with his comrades at Fort Donelson. He was the son of William M. Bell and the late Margaret Nason Milling of Starkville."
