Emily Nadine Austin, 19 of Orem, Utah passed away peacefully on Thursday August 2nd in her home surrounded by her family after a long battle with Cancer. Emily was born on a beautiful spring afternoon April 23, 1993 in Orem, Utah to Mark and Laurie Austin. Emily was the second of four children.
Emily's was only five years old when she was diagnosed with leukemia. She had just started kindergarten. For the next fourteen years she battled cancer. She spent a great deal of time in the hospital and was loved by the doctors and nurses at Primary Children's hospital in Salt Lake City. Emily loved them as family. Thank you for your many many years of love and service.
Her treatments would usually last for about two years and the leukemia would appear to be in remission but within a year or two after the treatments stopped the cancer would reappear. She had a born marrow transplant when she was thirteen going on fourteen. This was very hard on her but it appeared to be successful until just before her seventeenth birthday the doctors told her that the cancer had reappeared. She started treatments again but after two years, in March of this year, she was told the treatment was not successful and there was nothing more they could do. She was given a few weeks or months to live.
Life was very precious to her. She enjoyed swimming, horseback riding, camping, shopping with her mother and riding in her fatherfs jeep. She enjoyed music, movies and going out to eat. She loved little children and they loved to be with her. She did so many fun things with her brothers and sister. They had many good times together. She loved to be together as a family and enjoyed going places together. Her mother and father became her best friends and their care and compassion for her was an inspiration to family, friends and neighbors.
When she was well enough to go to school she loved it. To be with other young people her age and to enjoy the social life that goes with school was so wonderful to her. She enjoyed learning and was so organized. The first thing she would do when she got home from school was to organize what homework she had to do and then set out to get it done. She was not a procrastinator and this helped her with her grades. Her last full year that she was able to attend school was the ninth grade. She was an honor student with straight A's for the year. She was able to attend most of her sophomore year and was getting straight Afs when the cancer reappeared. Her junior and senior years she was not able to attend class as often as she desired. She loved to sing and her music class soon became her favorite class.
When she was informed that she only had a short time before the angels called her home she was asked if there was anything she wanted to do. The following article written by the Alpine School District helps to understand how she answered this question and the blessing she has been to others;

Emily set three goals for herself during the 2011-2012 school year which were: 1) to go on choir tour to Southern California and sing with the OHS choir at Disneyland, 2) to see her brother return from his LDS mission, and 3) to graduate with her high school class at Orem High. Emily was able to accomplish all three of these goals she set for herself!
Mr. Browning, principal at OHS said: "Emily has made a huge difference on the Orem High School class of 2012. She was voted and recognized at our graduation ceremony as the Class of 2012's Most Inspirational Student. Her persistence, determination and will to complete high school kept her and us going. It was a pleasure to shake her hand as her father wheeled her across the platform to receive her Orem High School diploma."
Emily's mom said, "Emily is such a courageous young lady and never gives up. Throughout all of her trials with cancer she has been able to maintain a positive attitude and hopefully has been able to inspire others to set goals and work hard to achieve them."
When Emily's brother returned home from his LDS mission to Mexico this facebook message was posted by Emily;
"My big brother is home!! After a long, long day yesterday and today, he is home! I got the First Hug, then my mom, then Vaughan, Lilly, and Finally my dad! It's so great to hear him speak and laugh! Taylor... I love you so much with all my heart! Welcome Home!!"
Emily has received so much love and kindness from so many people and her last facebook message was to all of us. She said the following;
"Thank you all so much for supporting me, and thank you for all helping and loving my family too!! :) I love you all!!"

Family and friends may attend a viewing Sunday evening from 6-8 pm at Olpin Family Mortuary, 494 South 300 East, Pleasant Grove and at the Cascade Stake Center on Monday from 9-10:45 am. Interment will be in the Lindon City Cemetery.
