Death Takes Mrs. Humphrey...Passes Away Friday at Home of Son in Chicago.
Mrs. Bert Humphrey, 58, 620 North Van Buren Street [Iowa City, Iowa] passed away at midnight Friday at the home of her son, Mr. Walter Humphrey, in Chicago after a few days illness with diphtheria.
Kathryn Loretta McCabe was born April 12, 1877 in York Township, Iowa County. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James McCabe of Williamsburg. For a number of years she taught school in Johnson County [in the Windham area]. On September 26, 1899 she was married to Mr. Bert [Oliver Burton] Humphrey of near Windham. [They were married at her grandparents' home John & Ann (Williams) Reynolds.)
They moved to [St. Lawrence, Hand County] South Dakota in 1908 and returned to Iowa City in 1927. She had resided here until about a month ago when she went to Chicago [to help take care of her grandchildren].
She is survived by her husband and 10 children, Frank and William of Pierre, SD; Walter and Clement of Chicago; James of Winchester, Ind; Mrs. Florence [Ralph] Lenz of West Branch [Iowa], Mrs. Gertrude [James J.] Meade of Oxford, and Thomas, Grace, and Ruth at home; her mother, three brothers, and two sisters, seven grandsons and one granddaughter. She was preceded in death by one son, Cletus who died in infancy.
Funeral arrangements have not been completed. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery at Williamsburg, Iowa.
