Edward W. Kaighn served as a soldier in the Union Army during the Civil War. He was mustered into Company A, 44th Pennsylvania Volunteer Militia of 1863 as a Corporal during the 60 day "Curtin's Call-up." The next year, he volunteered again and was mustered into Company B, 197th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry as a Private on July 26, 1864. He was mustered out with Company, November 11, 1864. During his service, the regiment was posted as prison guards at Rock Island, IL.
