PORTLAND - Beulah passed away at peace in Portland, after a brief time in the hospital, after visits with all of her close family. Beulah lived in Portland all of her life, although she traveled extensively. She was born the third of four children to Erik and Bessie (Slovarp) Villa. Beulah excelled in school, particularly math, and grew up in a neighborhood filled with girls, with whom she remained lifelong friends. She graduated from Jefferson High School with honors at age 16. She was accepted at Reed College, however, family circumstances led to her immediate employment at Malone's Candy Store, which eventually became Van Duyn's. She remained there for several years and returned as a store manager/trainer, once her own family was grown.
Beulah met her husband, Frank I. Dennis, when her brother brought him home for dinner. They were married Sept. 6, 1936. Their daughter, Barbara, was born in Sept. 1937. Frank and Beulah shared nearly 63 years of marriage together. They enjoyed being hosts to family and friends from near and far. Picnics, card games, trips to the coast and enjoying people were their passion. Beulah collected and shared plants, plates, coupons, recipes and most of all, friends and relations. She continued to remain close to successive generations. She remained active with them, one and all, until the day she passed.
Beulah was an avid sports person, and remained active with tennis and volleyball up through her sixties and trained the upcoming generations. In her early married years, she learned to wallpaper and did so for many years. She was also a ceramics hobbyist.
Frank was a lifelong employee of Union Pacific Railroad and took advantage of train travel throughout their married life. They traveled North, West, East and South, and when Barbara graduated college, they began their travels all over the world.
Beulah was a consummate volunteer throughout her daughter's school years including through college. She also volunteered as a tax preparer and maintained a steady support along with her sisters and brother with their mother, for whom they cared for until she passed at age 90.
Beulah was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Frank; her siblings, Elmer, Evelyn and Helen; and numerous family and close friends. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara and husband, Walt Barrie; grandchildren, Scott (Fawn) Barrie, Wendy (Wes) McWhorter and Jill (Greg) Moore; great-grandchildren, Cameron, Conner, Jenna, Lyla, Katelyn, Austin, Collin, Tate, Addison and Carson; and beloved nephew and nieces and families. Contributions in Beulah's memory may be made to: Oregon Food Bank, Dr.s Without Borders, O.P.B., Shriner's Children's Hospital or The Hollywood Senior Center. Beulah was interred in a private ceremony with her husband at Rose City Cemetery.
