He was born in Monroe Township, Darke County, Ohio to Sarah Pippinger & John Arnett Sr. When he was old enough, he crossed the plains to California, settling in Marysville, Yuba County. He enlisted in the Union Army on November 2, 1864 at Loyalton, California and was mustered into his company on November 19, 1864. His company left San Francisco to Southern California in March 1865, from there to Fort Yuma, Arizona District in June 1865. From there, he was stationed at various posts throughout the west, seeing no action. He was mustered out with his company at the Presidio, San Francisco on April 26, 1866. After his discharge, he headed north to Colusa, settling around the Arbuckle area farming and doing ranch work in Stonyford. He never married and passed away at the age of 80 years and is buried in the Colusa Community Cemetery, Section N, Lot 1, Grave 5.
