Matti Matinpoika Metsälä was born in Ratula, Elimäki, Kymenlaakso, Finland on 17th of September 1848 as the youngest child of Matti Simonsson and Anna Helena Fredriksdotter Metsälä. He had five elder siblings.

Matti wedded Maria Johanneksentytär Takala on 30th of September 1876 and the couple moved to Kotka where Matti worked as saw worker until Maria decided that the their children, daughters Emilia, Eeva Lyydia and Anna Elin should be educated proberly and the family moved to Haavisto, Ruotsinpyhtää. There Matti founded a shop which he held to the beginning of the 20th century. After that the shop building was lifted to Hovinsaari, Kotka where it worked as tenement.

Matti's youngest daughter acted as the landlady of the tenement in Kotka and Matti and Maria lived in Haavisto where they had bought a farm.

At the farm Matti lived until the mid-1920's when he became sick and moved to the Hovinsaari tenement to live with his eldest daughter Emilia who had bought the building from his father couple of years earlier. Though he returned to Haavisto before his death in 1928.

Matti and Maria Metsälä raised their grandson Eino August Tuomisalo as child of their own because Eino's mother Anna Elin died before Eino was even one year old.
