Deliah "Buddy" was born in 1880 in Morgan County Decatur Alabama, The 3rd child of Wash and Winnie Draper Clay. His siblings were Cutchie, Ella, Dock, Gurtee and Emmit. Wash died in 1913.

Buddy who sign his name DL Clay married Octavia Jamar in 1901. Octavia was the youngest child of Lettie Lewis Patterson and James Jamar, A slave Owner. Octavia had one brother Walter Jamar born 1876,Died 1944. Octavia was the mother of Walter Rooks born 1899, died 1979.
Lettie clay Goffer born 1903 died 1995, , Archie Lee Clay b. 1904, d. 1913: Theordore roosevelt clay b. 1906, d.1956. Pearl clay noble b. 1907, d. 1936: Lillie Clay b. 1915 and Pauline Clay Robinson b. 1917, d 1992

In the early 1900's, The family moved to Madison county. Buddy and Octavia were sharecroppers on a large farm in the Pond Beat Community, loca5ed in SW Madison county Currently the home of the Redstone Arsenal

Sharecroppers were allowed to own cows for milk, hogs, for meat and a garden for vegetables. To make end meet, Buddy raised Calves, hogs and chickens. During the winter months, he would go across the community peddling beef, pork and eggs
