In Memoriam
Elizabeth Bilharz Rahr died peacefully at home on Christmas Day 2003 at the age of
99 years. She had an extremely full and active life in which many of the following
qualities rose to fruition:
She was a fiercely loyal mother who exemplified integrity, love of nature, good
manners and self-discipline. She was well schooled in English literature and was
fluent in French and German-much of which were established during her years at
Milwaukee Downer Seminary and Pine Manor College in Wellesley, Mass.
In her lifelong love of the Northwoods of Wisconsin, she became an accomplised
canoeist, camper and marksman with both rifle and shotgun. Some of her major talents
lay in cooking, needlework, in the creation of fine rugs and knitting for her friends
and children.
She was an active member of the Rahr Foundation, which served many civic institutions
in Manitowoc; ie., the Rahr Memorial School Forest, the Rahr-West Art Museum, Silver
Lake College, Holy Family Memorial Hospital, the Manitowoc Area YMCA, the Camp
Manitowish YMCA, the Domestic Violence Center, and the American Red Cross. She helped
establish the Manitowoc Junior League.
Further, she accompanied her husband and several biologists to participate in plant
and wildlife expeditions to India and many countries in Africa to collect specimens
for the diorama exhibitions of the Milwaukee Public Museum.
Mrs. Rahr had a perceptive business acumen and was of considerable help to her husband
in establishing lifelong brewing customer friendship for the Rahr Malting company.
Guido Rahr was president and CEO of this family company (established in 1847) from
1933 until 1956. He preceded her in death in 1985. Her main domicile has been in her
Manitowoc, Wisconsin home that she and her husband had built in 1933.
To conclude the family will miss her hugely. Wouldn't it be a wonderful inheritance
to receive some of these aforementioned talents and qualities.
