Samuel Fletcher was sergeant at the battle of Bunker Hill and in 1776 served as captain and quartermaster. He commanded a company at Ticonderoga and was in the battle of Bennington. At the close of the war he held the rank of brigadier general. He died at Townshend in 1814.

The town of Fletcher, Vermont, is named for him.

His first cousin, Cotton Fletcher, was an early settler of South Hero, Vermont.
