Irma Wynema Thompson was born August 11, 1908 in Dallas, Texas, possibly on Willow or Ann Street in East Dallas. Her parents were Thomas B. Thompson and Artie Hunter. She had two older siblings: Claude Leslie and Arel Katrean. About 1910, the family moved to Caddo Mills, where mother Artie died. The family then moved to Branch, Texas and finally to Wylie in Collin County. In 1926, Irma married Johnnie Russell Cain. They had three children: Dorotha Lee, Geraldine, and John Thomas. Irma and Johnnie raised their children in Dallas. In the early 1950s, Irma went to "beauty school" to become a "beautician" (i.e., hair stylist). She worked at that occupation throughout the 1950s and 1960s.
