Winnona Wilkins Adams
1922~2012
Salt Lake City, Utah-Within weeks following her 90th birthday, our beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Winnona Wilkins Adams, passed away at her home on June 22, 2012. Winnie was born June 9, 1922 in Mt. Home, Utah to Reuben and Lillis (Moffitt) Wilkins. She grew up working alongside her mother and siblings to sustain the family dairy farm during the Great Depression. Her warm and friendly personality naturally led to her becoming a cheerleader at Altamont High School and assuming the lead role in various dramatic productions. After graduating from high school, Winnona left the farm life behind to attend Brigham Young University, to pursue a career in modeling, and to seek service with the federal gov't during WWII. It was then that she met her future husband, Freeman E. (Dutch) Adams. They were married December 12, 1947 and together raised three children. Dutch preceded her in death in December, 1996. Mom loved the color pink, her patented roses, and her Cadillac's; but most of all, she loved her family. She especially enjoyed trips to Dutch's cabin at Bryants' Fork near Strawberry Reservoir. Winnona also cherished the many friendships she made while working for almost 30 years as the principal's secretary at Central Jr., Kearns High and Olympus High Schools. Through the years, Winnie's kitchen became a gathering place for friends and family. Many stopped by to reminisce the past or share a laugh, but few visitors left her presence without feeling uplifted and a bit more cheerful than when they arrived. Mom was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority and of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints wherein she held various callings. Winnie lived a long and wonderful life. She will be missed by many, especially her "bridge girls" who have met to play cards the second Saturday of every month for the past sixty years. Winnona is survived by her children, John, Ken and Ann; her grandchildren, Aireann (Brian) Lindsay, Amy (Whitney) Gardiner, Kenny (Lisa) Clinger, Laura (Chris) Ashton and Madelyn Elizabeth Adams; her two great grandchildren, Abigail and Ellie Lindsay; a brother, O. Wayne Wilkins, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, a brother (Ralph), and a sister (Madelyn). Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 28, 2012 at 11:00am at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 South Highland Drive, Salt Lake City. There will be a viewing one hour prior to services and a viewing Wednesday, June 27 from 6pm-8pm, both viewings will be held at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary.
