Civil War Union Army Soldier. When the Civil War started he was mustered in as a Private in the Commonwealth Independent Company Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery on April 24, 1861. He served in garrison duty at Fort Delaware, then was honorably mustered out on August 5, 1861.

On September 12, 1864 he was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in Company K, 38th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry, and was mustered in on September 14. He served through the conclusion of the war, and was honorably mustered out on June 30, 1865.

After the war he was a commission merchant.

On November 20, 1905 his wife, Frances W. Hand, filed for a United States Army Widow's Pension (Application #838456, Certificate #6452786, NJ).
