ELMA LOUISE RHODES was born at home (4110 Park--a home built by her father) in Kansas City, Missouri to Vida Elma Fowler Rhodes and Eugene Rhodes.
As a child, Elma loved playing baseball and roller skating. She would roller skate to grade school...even during the snow!
Elma attended Paseo High School and worked as a seamstress at a little dress shop in Mission, Kansas.
When Elma was in her early 20's she sang on the radio with her sister, Marion, for the Uncle Ezra Show.
Later she was an office worker at Midland Flour Milling Company about 1942.
During World War II, she loaded 50-caliber bullets into bandoleers at Lake City Arsenal. She commented that the most difficult part of her job at Lake City Arsenal was seeing the bandoleers return...covered in blood...to be re-loaded.
Walter and Elma enjoyed playing tennis at the Courts in the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City, Missouri. They were both avid bowlers and involved in bowling leagues.
Elma Louise Rhodes married Walter Alexander Russell Clyde on December 24, 1943 at the First Baptist Church in Kansas City, Wyandotte, Kansas. Walter was the son of Rachel Knox Clyde and Thomas Brown Clyde.
After marrying Walter, Elma moved to Georgia to be with him. While at Kessler Field, she worked as Secretary to the CO of the Army Air Force Camp.
Elma was active in the Ladies Auxillary of the National Association of Letter Carriers for many years. She held the offices of President, Vice-President and Secretary for them. She was an active member of the Johnson County Senior Arts Council, serving as Secretary and then Treasurer.
Elma's oil paintings have been on exhibit at all Shawnee Mission Post Offices and the University of Kansas Regent's Center. She sold many paintings and gave many to her friends and family. She also won many awards at the Senior Arts Council exhibits which were held throughout Johnson County, Kansas.
Elma's hobbies included oil painting, life drawing and silversmithing. She attended Johnson County Community College for art classes and silversmithing classes. She entered college in the 1980's--competing with college-aged students and making excellent grades! A very creative person, Elma was quite artistic.
She loved to sing and was a member of the church choir for many years. She enjoyed playing the piano and organ for family and friends.
As her two daughters were growing up, Elma enjoyed making apple-head dolls, china dolls-many with music boxes encased in their stuffed bodies and she made ceramics.
Elma was an accomplished seamstress and created numerous designs of her own for family and friends. She often made her daughters clothes for school.
Later in life, she learned how to crochet but made only one afghan.
Walter and Elma enjoyed playing cards with friends, especially Pinocle. She was famous for her home-made apple pies which earned many awards at church bake sales and socials.
Mom is buried at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Kansas City, Kansas beside Daddy and his parents.
