Family and history denotes the name, Wiley after his father. However, he was known by W.T. or Thompson. This evidence is proven by the 1860, 1880 and 1900 census where he uses the name Thompson. Wiley Thompson Snell was the son of Rev. Wiley Bell and Elizabeth Cross Snell.

Thompson married Frances Emily Burrow on February 7, 1850 in Bedford County, Tennessee. Together the couple raised eight children; Matilda Katherine, Nimrod Cain, Albert Freeman, James Wiley, George Cooper, Charles Thompson, Warren Edgar and Mary.
