"On the night of June 24, 1852, Dr. David H. Davis returned home exhausted from caring for his patients who had cholera...The doctor knew that he had contracted the cholera but he had been exposed to it before and had lived, so he was optimistic. The doctor was overly optimistic - before the next day, he would be dead.
His wife, his children and his cook had all been feeling unwell...they seemed to be sleeping, (but) feverish. Had the doctor not been so exhausted, he would have examined them more closely...
Mrs. Davis would be dead within the next two days. The Davis's oldest child together, Albert Brevard Davis, ..(and) Mrs. Davis's daughter by her first husband, Emily Jane Brevard...would die on July 7, 1852...Chloe, the cook, ...would die within a few hours (of the doctor).
Sometime the next morning someone came to the door of the house to ask the doctor to visit a sick person and found the doctor dead, the cook dead and Mrs. Davis and the two children unconscious...there was one living person - three month old Frank Allen Davis...in bed with his (dying) mother ...The neighbors took Frank Allen to Mrs. Davis's brother, Bernard McGuire, where he could be cared for.
There continued to be deaths in Jackson from the cholera until frost killed the spread of the bacteria."
