DENNIS, JOHN HENRY HUTCHINGS
John Henry Hutchings Dennis has been a prominent member of the Wharton bar since 1893 and has taken an active part in the public affairs of that city and vicinity. In 1897 he was elected a member of the twenty-fifth legislature, representing Wharton, Colorado, Gonzales and Lavaca counties.
Wharton was incorporated a city in 1902. Mr. Dennis was elected the first mayor, and served two terms, during which time many of the public improvements of the city were undertaken. At the present time. Mr. Dennis is county attorney of Wharton County, having been elected to that office in 1906 and re-elected in 1908.
Wharton is his native city. He was born May 10, 1873, his father being the venerable Isaac N. Dennis, who is eighty-six, and the oldest living member of the Wharton bar. A native of Alabama, where he studied law and began practice, Isaac N. Dennis came to Wharton in 1853, and for a half century has been more or less actively identified with the profession in this city. He served several times in the Texas legislature. His wife was Miss Maggie Knox, who was born and educated near Holly Springs, Mississippi, and who came to Galveston and lived with her uncles, Robert and D. G. Mills, up to the time of her marriage.
Mr. Dennis, after attending the public schools of Wharton, entered the law department of the University of Texas, and on being admitted began general practice at Wharton. He is a member of the Wharton Bar Association, a Democrat in polities, and a member of the Baptist church. His fraternal connections are: Wharton Lodge No. 621, A. F. & A. M., Wharton Chapter No. 251, R. A. V., the Knights of Pythias, the Modern Woodmen of America, and the Pretorians.
In 1898 he married Miss Erna Anderson, a daughter of J. P. Anderson of Eagle Lake, Texas. They have one child, J. H.
