Received into the Catholic Church, March 29, 1819. Studied for the priesthood in Baltimore and Paris. Ordained April 24, 1825, in Baltimore. A member of the Society of St. Sulpice, Eccleston served at the Sulpician House at Issy, outside of Paris. He also taught at St. Mary's College in Baltimore, 1827-1829, and served at president of the same institution from 1829 to 1834. Consecrated coadjutor Archbishop of Baltimore, Sept. 14, 1834, and succeeded to the See October 19, 1834, upon the death of Archbishop James Whitfield. Presided over the Third, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, and Seventh Provincial Councils of Baltimore, in 1837, 40, 43, 46, and 49, respectively. Died at Georgetown, D.C.
