HERRIN -- Iris Abney, 66, formerly of Johnston City, died at 9:05 p.m. Sunday, June 10, 2012, in Herrin Hospital.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Pyle Funeral Home in Johnston City with Clem Clemens officiating. Burial will be in Whiteash Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Iris Abney

HERRIN -- Iris Abney, 66, a former resident of Johnston City, passed away at 9:05 p.m. Sunday, June 10, 2012, in Herrin Hospital.

Iris was born Jan. 1, 1946, in West Frankfort to Ira Newton Sr. and Laccie (Boyd) Newton.

She married Henry Abney on May 11, 1964, in Marion, and they were married for seven years.

Iris was retired, having been employed at Herrin Hospital as a certified nurse's assistant for more than 30 years.

She was of Christian faith.

Iris enjoyed going to yard sales, where she could always find a bargain or two. She also liked to watch Gun Smoke television rerun episodes. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Frank Costello of Youngstown, Ohio; son, Michael Abney of Energy; daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and John Roberts of Herrin; daughter-in-law, Valerie Kennedy of Herrin; seven grandchildren, Frankie and Daniel Costello of Youngstown, Ohio, Benjamin Abney of Energy, Lacy Roberts of Harrisburg, Marshall, and Eli and Emily Roberts of Herrin; three sisters, Vera Krantz of Johnston City, Thelma Veil of West Frankfort and Janice Taylor of Marion; and also a very dear friend whom she considered as a sister, Bonnie Shoemake of Herrin. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Ira Newton Jr.; and a sister, Shirley Stacy.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 14, in Pyle Funeral Home in Johnston City, with Minister Clem Clemans officiating. Interment will be in Whiteash Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday at the funeral home.
