In 1952, as their family began to grow, they moved across the street to 3175 Miller Street, which was a three bedroom house which they purchased for $3,900. By this time he had been active in the Republican politics and got an appointed job with the City of Philadelphia Board of Assessors. He supplemented his income by selling clothing, mainly dresses to customers which he sold in a door-to-door fashion. He learned the trade by working at a store near Kensington & Allegheny Aves. He also sold jewelry mattresses, and some appliances (although this never amounted to much). His "bread and butter" was women's clothing to whom he sold on credit. Payment was made to him in amounts of $1.00 or $2.00 a week. In 1957, the house on Miller Street was sold for $7,500 and then they purchased a twin house at 3561Primrose Road for $14,900. In the early sixties, He experienced kidney failure. At that time, they were just experimenting with dialysis and it was not available as a treatment. He died in May 20,1965. He was a self-taught and highly intelligent man. He liked to quote Shakespeare and philosophers.
