Dorris Bumgarner, 86; service is Thursday
Dorris "Doc" Yates Bumgarner, 86, of Morehead City, formerly of Burlington, went to be with our Lord on Sunday, April 23, 2006, after a year of declining health.
A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Alamance Memorial Park, Burlington. Those who wish to attend are asked to convene at Rich and Thompson Funeral Home of Burlington at noon.
Mr. Bumgarner was born on March 29, 1920, in Williamston, S.C., the youngest child of the late Parks Peyton and the late Lula Cloninger Bumgarner. After graduating from Gaffney High School in Gaffney, S.C., he entered the Civilian Conservation Corps and worked in Arches National Park in Moab, Utah, and in Gilroy, Calif. At the outbreak of World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in San Diego, Calif., where he trained and graduated with the Pearl Harbor Avengers. He studied radio and radar technology at Texas A&M, Corpus Christi, Texas. Mr. Bumgarner served on a number of ships, including the USS Webster and rose to the rank of chief petty officer. He returned to his family in Gaffney but soon moved to Burlington to work at Western Electric, which he retired from in 1983.
He was a member of Piedmont Presbyterian Church, Burlington, Morehead City Civitans and Friends and Parents of the Station Club, a vocational training program for the physically and mentally challenged.
On May 28, 1951, Mr. Bumgarner married Frances Lee Carter, who preceded him in death in 1990. The couple had two children, Wayne Lynn Bumgarner of Morehead City and Shelia Ann Bumgarner of Charlotte. Both were devoted to their father and believed it was a privilege to care for their father as he cared for them throughout their lives. His beloved daughter-in-law, Melody Ralston Bumgarner of Morehead City and granddaughter, Melissa Lindsey Bumgarner of Wilmington also survive him..
Other surviving relatives include three nieces. Hazel Ridenhour Lutz of Mount Holly, Sarah Frances Parker of South Carolina and Elizabeth Abernathy Noble of Swansboro; two nephews, Ben Painter of Ahern, Holland and Bob Painter of Gaffney, S.C.; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Paul Albert Bumgarner; and sisters, Beulah Bernice Abernathy and Sarah Louis Painter.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. tonight at Rich and Thompson Funeral Home of Burlington.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the Elon Home for Children at Elon College.
