Hugh enlisted in the 18th Alabama Regiment Infantry, Company G, CSA, in October 1862, along with his younger brother Henry. Both Hugh and Henry were captured on November 25, 1863, at Missionary Ridge, Tennessee. On December 9, 1863, they were transferred to the Military Prison at Rock Island Barracks, Illinois. Hugh died on January 12, 1864, and Henry died on August 22, 1864 - both from pneumonia. Both are buried in the Rock Island Confederate Cemetery.
Hugh's only child, Nancy E. "Nannie" Armstrong, was born on July 25, 1863, in Jonesboro, Jefferson County, Alabama. His widow Maggie never remarried and lived to age 81. She is buried in the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Bessemer.
