Sue McDarment Bogardus

Sue McDarment Bogardus of Warsaw Kentucky passed away from natural causes March 24, 2012. She was born on July 30, 1920 in Owen County, Kentucky. She was the sixth child of Thomas and Birdie McDarment. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Dr. Carl R. Bogardus. She has one living sister, Churchill (Mickey) Giuliani of Sharonville Ohio.
Sue lived a very full life, and was well known for her interest in history, genealogy, and education, as well as gardening and birds native to Kentucky. She supplied many individuals from all over the country with genealogical information, especially about Gallatin County and Central Kentucky. She was a lifelong member of the Warsaw Christian Church and was an active parishioner for many decades, until her health declined. She was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and enjoyed that association for many decades. She was active in local, county and state politics, and had many friends in the State of Kentucky, although she outlived most of them. Sue was a force of nature, and affected many lives positively over her 9 plus decades.
For a number of years she was the owner of the Moon River Night Club, and she also managed the Butler Lodge in General Butler State Park, Carrollton. She had many different and diverse jobs in the course of her life. She was very patriotic and worked in an Indiana factory in support of the war effort during World War 2. She often joked that every time she tried to retire, she was offered another job.
The great love of her life was Dr. Carl Bogardus, and she was very grateful to her friend the late Harold Brown Weldon for introducing them. She and Dr. Carl were the founders of the Gallatin County Historical Society and they spent many hours together in the River Room of their house, Belle Reviere, overlooking the Ohio River, happily engaged in genealogical research and writing. They gave generously to her church and the Historical Society, as well as to many charities, especially medical, military, and veterans charities. They endowed a college scholarship fund for Gallatin County high school students.
One of the special things about Sue was her loyalty. She cared for a former employee at Moon River for many years until his death after he became disabled. She loved to tell entertaining stories about all kinds of topics. When she was in her late eighties, she was able to identify who was in the photo albums from the 1920s and 1930s. Her love of life, her love of family, and her stories are going to be greatly missed. We take solace in the fact that God allowed her to be with us for these 9 decades, and she will always have a cherished place in our hearts. Go with God dear Sue.

Her surviving nieces and nephews are Teresa Giuliani, Michael Giuliani, Anthony Giuliani, Harold Wallace, Linda Walls, Susan Amburgey, Louie McDarment Jr., Pat Lunsford, Brenda Hensley, Beverly Mason, Alben McDarment and Troi Cunningham. She was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters Mary Elizabeth Simpson, Lina Cassingham, Louie McDarment Sr., Paul Edward McDarment, Hugh William McDarment, and Ollie Lee McDarment, and her stepdaughter Nancy B. West.
Visitation will be held Saturday, March 31st,from 11am until 1pm at the Garnett-New-McDonald Funeral Home in Warsaw. Funeral services will begin at 1pm. Burial will follow in the Warsaw Cemetery.
