2nd Lieutenant Alter was the pilot of U.S. Army Air Corps B-24E Liberator #42-7053. Perished when the bomber collided with a 20 million cubic feet natural gas storage tank, at the intersection of West 73rd Street and Central Park Avenue in Chicago, after departing the Municipal Airport (now Midway International Airport). All twelve crew aboard were killed.
