POISON OF SEWER GASES
This Is Believed to Have Caused Death of Two Year Old Child on South Side

ENTIRE FAMILY OF SIX ILL
Broken Sewer Pipe in Cellar at Home of Daniel Vogel
May Have Been Responsible

Poisoning from the escaping sewer gases, that invaded the home as the result of a broken pipe in the cellar, is believed to have caused the death of the two year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Vogel which occurred Saturday evening and it is feared that other members
of the family have been affected. Symptoms of the child's illness indicated poison of some nature and investigation made revealed the broken sewer pipe in the cellar, in a room that is directly under that used by the family as sleeping apartments and it is the opinion given by physicians that death was due to the escaping gases.

Three young children of the family were taken ill at the same time and although the other two recovered upon treatment given by physicians, there was apparent but little improvement in the younger child and death resulted Saturday. There had been noticeable for some time
previous to the serious illness of the child a decline in health and the parents state that they had noted the odor, that is now ascribed to sewer gases for some time, but had not discovered the broken pipe.

The physician who was called directed the investigation and a city plumber who was called in located the pipe. Although repairs have been made and precautions taken there is danger of typhoid fever to other members of the family from the effects they have suffered.

This is the second child that Mr. and Mrs. Vogel have lost by death since their removal here and the sympathy of many friends is extended to them in their sad bereavement. The family resides at 1418 Marshal street in the same district in which the city has been experiencing trouble with the sewers that have been damaged by the recent heavy rains.
