The trouble had its origin when Sheriff Garett Scott was held responsible by the White Mens Union for alleged miscounduct of affairs. At the recent election Scott was defeated & later was warned to leave the country, which he refused to do. late Wednesday afternoon the Sheriff was shot & seriously wounded by an unknown person. Emmett Scott, his brother, & William McDonald engaged in a street duel. When the smoke of the battle cleared away,both were dead, as was also John Bradley. Jr. The entire town of Anderson was excited over the affair & Sheriff Scott took possesion of the jail, which he has since held by force.

John J. Bradley, Jr. was buried under auspices of the Odd Fellows. Young McDonald was also a member of this order but Navasota gentlemen arrived too late to particpate in his obsequities. The body of Emmett Scott was laid away shortly after 12 oclock. Both Bradley & McDonald were to have been married shortly. Bradley was shot in the region of the heart by Scott & was so close as to be powdered burned. He ran into his store when the shootimg began. McDonald shot Scott after he (McDonald) had first been knocked down & shot,
