Died Monday, January 12, 2004. Dr. Bernhard was born on June 24, 1920, in New York, NY, the son of Torben M. and Mary (Nielsen) Bernhard. On June 2, 1941 he married Ramona Bailey, who survives him. Dr. Bernhard was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He worked as an Educator and had served as President of Western Illinois University from 1968-1974 and President of Western Michigan University from 1974-1985. He will be remembered as being a true leader and visionary. He was deeply devoted to his family and a man of great faith. He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Dane Bernhard. Besides his wife, he is survived by his children, John Gary (Jo Ann) Bernhard of Shutesbury, MA, Scott Martin (Veronica) Bernhard of Seattle, WA, Randall Lee (Janea) Bernhard of Pineville, LA, and Julie Ann Bernhard and Will Reynolds of Seattle, WA; grandchildren, Caitlin Bernhard, Heidi (Jared) Bernhard-Bubb, John Matthew Bernhard, Erik Bernhard, Anne Noelle Bernhard, Kurt Torben Bernhard, Amanda Bernhard and Torben Bernhard; great grandson, Ullyses Bubb. Private Family Services are being planned. A Public Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday in the building named in his honor, the Bernhard Center, Western Michigan University. Interment at Mount Ever Rest Memorial Park North. Those wishing to make lasting gifts in Dr. Bernhard's name are asked to direct those gifts to Western Michigan University College of Fine Arts or the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra.
