Abigail was the daughter of Simon Gookin of Hampton, Rockingham County, New Hampshire and Prudence Ilsley of Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts. Prudence and Simon were married on 21 March 1742 in Hampton, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. Prudence and Simon had two children. They were: Abigail Gookin; and John Cotton Gookin.
Her father, Simon Gookin was owner of property in present Standish, Me. (up to 30 Nov 1785 named Pearson and Hobbstown - township granted 20 Apr 1750). Simon was noted as a "housewright" of Falmouth (Portland) Me. in a document of 12 Sep 1757 which was a supply agreement by several persons setting up a "search and kill" operation against marauding Indians. (Maine Historical & Genealogical Recorder, 1:13). He is listed as a Lieutenant in the 1st Co. in Falmouth in a roster of 14 Apr 1762 (ibid, 9:151); and on 6 Jun 1769 he was one of the signators of a protest meeting against British imports ( ibid , 1:11). Married 21 Mar 1742, prob. at Falmouth (Portland) Me. to Prudence Illsley , daughter of Capt. Isaac Illsley, descended from Sir William Illsley who was b. Newbury, England 1608, came to New England 1634. Capt. Illsley was b. 1703, Newbury, Mass.; d. 15 Apr 1781 - settled in Falmouth (Portland) 1735*
Abigail married Micah Sampson on 23 December 1762 in Falmouth ME. They had eight children, namely:
- James Gardner Sampson was born before 17 July 1768;
- Deborah Sampson was born before 14 April 1771;
- Lucy Sampson was born before 17 October 1773;
- Abigail Sampson was born before 28 July 1776;
- Betty Sampson was born before 03 January 1779;
- Joshua Sampson was born before 12 August 1781;
- Dorothy Sampson was born before 22 August 1784; and
- John Sampson was born before 1788.
All the children were born in Portland, Cumberland County, Maine.
