Herman was married to Jennie E. Jones Westphal, and they adopted a daughter, Betty J. Westphal, in 1929, when they lived in Midway, Hot Springs, Arkansas. His father was Henry Westfall from Germany. The name "Westfall" was changed to "Westphal" after they came to America when Herman was a baby. In a 1930 US census, he was listed as a farmer in Arkansas, and at the time of his death, Herman was listed as a retired grocerman in Texas.∼Retired Grocerman
