Both of her husbands became pilots. She operated a flying service for 20 years, mostly to train pilots but also to ferry sightseers, passengers and cargo around the country and once to South America. She never crashed.

JOHNSON, EVELYN BRYAN "MAMA BIRD" - age 102, of Jefferson City, TN passed away on May 10, 2012. She was born November 4, 1909 in Corbin, KY, the daughter of Edward William and Myme Estelle (Fox) Stone.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Morristown, TN. She was an airport terminal executive, designated pilot examiner and manager of Moore Murrell Airport in Morristown, TN since 1953.

Among her many awards earned was Governor's Appointee Tennessee Aeronautical Commission, Lt. Col. Civil Air Patrol, Recipient Carnegie Hero Medal, Service to Mankind Award Recipient, Kitty Hawk Award, Friends of Aviation Award, Steward G. Potter Aviation Education Award, Elder Statesman of Aviation Award, Memorial Award National Aeronautics Association and the 99's, Flight Instructor of the Year 1973 and 1979 Southern Region, Aviation Airport Manager of the Year 1981, Women of Aviation Pioneers Hall of Fame, Hamblen Women Hall of Fame, Flight Instructor Hall of Fame, Ky Aviation Hall of Fame, Tennessee Aviation Hall of Fame, National Aviation Hall of Fame, record holder for most flying time for women pilots Guiness Book of Records, The 99's Award of Merit, Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award, and many more too numerous to mention.

Preceded in death by her first husband, W. J. Bryan and her second husband, Morgan Johnson; step-son, Nick Johnson.

Has two GrandSons and two Great-GrandChildren.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 15, 2012 from 4:00 until 5:30 p.m. and from 6:00 until 7:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Morristown, TN. The funeral service will follow at 7:00 p.m. with Rev. Don Beach officiating. Family and friends will gather at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday morning at Jefferson Memorial Gardens in Jefferson City for an 11:00 a.m. graveside interment service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Legacy of Promise, 504 W. Main Street, Morristown, TN 37814. Arrangements By Farrar Funeral Home In Jefferson City, Tn 865-475-3892
