Jettie was very young when her mother passed away. Her father, Wiley Sr., was about 67 years old at that time and Wiley, Jr. was left in his care. Evidently unable to care for a baby, Jettie was sent to live with her aunt, Alice McClary, and grandparents, James and Martha McClary, in Flat River, MO. She passed away in 1916 of "nephritis" (kidney failure) due to Tuberculosis, having lived with her Aunt Alice McClary Duren and Alice's husband Edward, in Flat River, St. Francois County, MO.
An article about Jettie's death was published in the 8-4-1916 edition of the St. Francois County Record on page 4, column 4 and read: "Miss Jeddie (Jettie) Smith, who has been ill for several months with tuberculosis died at the home of her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. During (Duren). The remains were taken to Doe Run for interment."
I visited Doe Run Cemetery in 2016 and was able to confirm through cemetery sources the exact location where Jettie was buried even though there is no marker for her. I will attempt to have one made and placed on her burial plot when possible.
