Mrs. Ella Mae Howell, 78-year-old native and lifelong resident of this area, died September 9 at a McMinnville Hospital following an extended illness. Furner for Mrs. Howell was held at the Fuiten Mortuary Chapel, Forest Grove, Friday September 11. Rev. Ivan Marble, minister of the Gales Creek Community Church, conducted the service with concluding rites and vault interment at the Forest View cemetery, Forest Grove.

Mrs. Howell was born on Pumpkin Ridge near Mountaindale on October 16, 1891, the daughter of George and Phoebe Morgan. She spent all of her early life there and was married to Eli Howell at Hillsboro on November 10, 1909. Their early married years were spent on the Eli Howell's homestead above Mountaindale until 1911 when they traded this for a farm near Gales Creek from 1914 until failing health necessitated her moving to a nursing home. She had spent the past 12 years at McMinnvville where she had been in the nursing home. Mr. Howell preceded her in death here in September 1954.

Mrs. Howell was a member of the Gales Creek Community Church and the Gales Creek Women's Club and had for many years been active in the work of the Gales Creek community until her health failed.

Surviving are three children; two daughters, Mrs. Clifford (Hazel) Briggs, Carlton and Mrs. Chet (Bessie) Wohahn, Kallua-Kona, Hawaii; a son, Melvin of Gales Creek; a sister, Mrs. John (Minnie) Krinick, Vernonia; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
