DEATH OF JOHN FOWLER

Stricken by Paralysis on Last Friday Evening, He Passes from Unconsciousness to Death Last Evening

Last Friday at 6 o’clock p.m. John Fowler was stricken by paralysis while eating his supper, and continued unconscious until last evening at 9:15 o’clock, when death ensued and relieved him of all further suffering.

He was born in Gilford (sic) county, North Carolina and was married to Milley Glass, when 25 years of age. Five years after they moved to Morgan county, Ind., where he resided until 1855, when on Nov. 19th, he settled in Lyon county on the farm he owned at the time of his death, east of this city.

He was a member of the Methodist Protestant church for sixty years and shared the burden of work and expense of erecting the first log church in Morgan, Ind. A handsome tribute to this memory is the Fowler Chapel, southwest of this city, the erection of which was principally the results of his efforts.

His was an honorable and upright life. He was held in the highest esteem by all who knew him. The funeral cortege will leave the house on East street, at 10 o’clock to-morrow morning and will move to the Fowler Chapel, where Rev. C.H. Reynolds will conduct the funeral services, after which the remains will be buried at Hunt’s cemetery.

The wife of Mr. Fowler died about six years ago. The following sons and daughters who reside in and near Emporia survive him: Mrs. Sallie McCoin, Harvey Fowler, Mrs. Melinda Brown, Levi Fowler, Mrs. Jane Wilhite, Dorris and Eli Fowler, Mrs. Nancy Cheshire, Ruffin Fowler, Alson Fowler, Mrs. Letha Stack and John A. Fowler. Ironton Fowler resides at Clayton, Mo., Mrs. Frank Greason died in Indiana, and two sons Elvis and William still reside there. In the line of posterity there are now living one hundred and ninety-eight grandchildren, and about forty have died.
