For eight seasons (1990 to 1997, 1998 to 1999), he played at the center position in the National Basketball Association with the San Antonio Spurs, New Jersey Nets, Indiana Pacers, Los Angeles Clippers, and Boston Celtics. He earned All-American status at Brandon High School (Florida) and continued his athletics at the University of Florida, where he contributed to three teams that clinched NCAA Tournament berths. To date, he is the only SEC player to top 1,000 points, 800 rebounds, 250 assists, and 250 blocked shots. At the time of his death, he remained the fifth all-time scorer at the University of Florida. Selected by San Antonio during the 1st round of the 1990 NBA Draft, he appeared in 42 games as a rookie (1990-1991). In 217 regular season games, he totaled 587 points with 536 rebounds. Schintzius will perhaps be best remembered more so for his physical appearance, sporting a "lobster" mullet. In addition, he had acting parts in the Whoopi Goldberg picture "Eddie" (1996) and the cable-TV series "Arliss" (1997). He would go on to work in the sports marketing industry. He died of complications from respiratory failure. In recent years, he had battled leukemia. He was the son of Kenneth George Schintzius and Linda L. Schintzius.
