Martha Josephine Florence Ritchie was born on 19 Apr 1870 in Virginia. Most records created during her lifetime suggest she was known as Josephine or Florence. Josephine's headstone, as well as a family history, state that she was born in 1870, however there exists a birth record in Washington County for a Martha J.F. Ritchie, born to James L. and Rosannah M. Ritchie on April 19th, 1871. This same child appears to be enumerated with James and Rosanna on the 1870 census (F___ J.M., age 1/12) and as a 10 year old on the 1880 census, so it is likely the birth record is in error
Marriage: 26 Jun 1899 She married James Beattie Ryburn, son of William McNeal Ryburn and Harriet T. Flournoy, on 26 Jun 1899 in Washington County, Virginia. From 1900 to 1933 James and Josephine spent their married life living near Glade Spring, Virginia. There they farmed, and raised their only child James Mack Ryburn. The 1920 census specifically stated that the family was living on the Gladespring and Damascus Road. It appears that in the first few years of their marriage they also provided a home for Josephine's nephew, Claude Ritchie. [son of Josephine's brother James W. Ritchie]
Martha died on 12 Feb 1963 at age 92.
Burial: She was buried at Knollkreg Memorial Cemetery in Abingdon, Virginia.
