COAL RUN - Arthur McKitrick, 104, of Tick Hill Road, Coal Run, died Monday (March 21, 2011) at Marietta Memorial Hospital.
He was born April 25, 1906, at Newport, Ohio, son of Wesley Sheridan and Blanche Carpenter McKitrick. He was a farmer from 1923 to 1942, when he enlisted in Company A, 332 Engineer Regiment in the U.S. Army. He served through World War II until 1945 in England, Scotland, Wales, France, Belgium, Germany, Holland and Luxembourg. After the service he worked at the River Gas Co. in Marietta retiring in 1969. He was a member of the Coal Run Church of Christ.
On Nov. 5, 1974, he was married to Verna Carpenter McKitrick and they made their home in Coal Run for many years. Verna died March 12, 2008. He is survived by several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; three brothers, Clifford, Elbert and Herbert McKitrick; three sisters, Grace Wagner, Alice Cozzens and Elsie Augenstein.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at McCurdy Funeral Home in Beverly with Evangelist Rich Lemal officiating. Burial will be in Waterford Cemetery with military services at the grave. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday.
