H, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863. He also enlisted in Philadelphia May 10, 1864, as a private with Co. L, 6th Pennsylvania Cavalry (70th Pa), transferred to Co. L, 2nd Pennsylvania Provisional Cavalry, June 17, 1865, as part of a war-end regimental consolidation, and honorably discharged with his company August 7, 1865. He never served with the 2nd Pennsylvania Cavalry (59th Pa) as the tombstone's inscription claims.
He married Mary Magdalena Reiling and fathered Rosa (b. @1867), George V. (b. 05/28/70), Sarah (b. @1875), and William (b. 10/06/77). Mary's subsequent status is unknown, but he married Anna May Carr, fifteen years his junior, c. 1880 and fathered Harry Jackson (b. 08/07/82 - Arnold Hickman), Bertha M. (b. 01/??/84 - married William Hoskin), Nettie Elnora (b. 04/15/87 - married Arnold Hickman), and Charles W. (b. 04/21/90). In 1890, he lived in West Manchester Township, York County, but was residing in York Borough at his death. His middle name is reported both as "Charles" and "Clayton."
