Jenetta and her sister Catherine Henderson David were born in Colinton, now a suburb of Edinburgh, and christened at the Slateford Secession Church.

Jenetta was baptised Janet Jessie, named for her mother's younger sister who had emigrated to Australia. She was known as Jenetta most of her adult life.

Their parents were Thomas Henderson, a papermaker at Kates Mill, Scotland, and Elizabeth Blamyre/Blaemire who moved the family to Missouri in 1857. The sea voyage aboard the "Constellation" took about 30 days with over 900 souls packed in steerage.

Their parents died in 1887 and 1885 in Osage County, Missouri.

The census shows Jenetta working as a housemaid in 1870, then living with Catherine's family from 1910 until her death.
