Eugene L. (Gene) Bishop, long time resident of Akron Colorado, died Tuesday April 3rd, 2012 at the Washington County Nursing Home, where he had resided for several months. Gene Bishop was born May 2nd, 1925 in Akron, Colorado. He was the 5th child of Page and Stella (Callahan) Bishop. At the age of 9 days old, his mother Stella died from complications to the Mumps. After her death the children were separated and taken in by close relatives. Gene was taken and raised by his Grandpa and Grandma Callahan and Aunt, Lizzie Callahan. Lizzie continued to play a crucial role in his and his family's life until her death in 1964. Gene attended Akron High School and graduated in 1943. However, one month before the graduation, he along with several other local boys, joined the Navy and were shipped off to fight in WWII. He served in the Pacific on the USS Natoma Bay as a radio messenger and was honorably discharged in December 1945. Gene returned to Akron, met and married on December 22, 1946. To that union were born two daughters. Gene started working for Commonwealth Utilities which later became Y-W Electric in 1947. He retired in 1987 after 40 years of service. Gene was a well-respected member of the community and was active in Lions Club, the Chamber of Commerce and served on the Akron City Council for several years. He also was an avid Bronco Fan and a loyal Akron Ram supporter. Gene is preceded in death by his parents, Page and Stella Bishop, Aunt Elizabeth (Lizzie) Callahan and Uncle Samuel Callahan, his two beloved sisters, two brothers, one step-brother, in-laws and one brother in-law. Gene is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, two daughters, cousin and lifelong friend, brother-in-law, adored grandchildren, great-grand children, and many very special nieces, nephews, and friends. A funeral service was held Saturday, April 7, 2012 at the Foursquare Church of Akron.

Inurnment followed at Akron Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Washington County Nursing Home, or to the Akron Lions Club. Brenner Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
