BIO:
LaVern Culbertson was born on January 16, 1900 [See above note for alternative date] in Tama, Iowa, the son of Charles and Mary (Balliett) Culbertson.
He was raised in Tama, Iowa and was educated there. On June 1917, he enlisted for service in Grinnell, Iowa during World War I. LaVern served overseas and was discharged in January 1919. On February 20, 1929, he married Doris Varner in Nevada, Iowa.
In 1923, LaVern graduated from Coyne Electrical School in Chicago, Il. He and his wife later moved to Bloomington, WI. He had been employed at the Interstate Electric Company, headquartered in Dubuque, and had been the manager at the Bloomington WI., plant. LaVern was the secretary at Bloomington's A.F. & A.M. (Ancient Free and Accepted Masons) No. 253.
On October 4, 1933, while attending the National Legion Convention in Chicago with "several buddies", LaVern had become ill and was taken to a hospital. By the morning of October 5th, LaVern had died. His death was assumed to have been caused by his 2-3 year battle with diabetes.
He was survived by his wife, four children: William, Charles, Robert, and Ruby [Sally], his mother and his Grandfather, George Balliett.
