John R. Bloom was born as Ragnvald Johannes Blom in Nydalen, Kristianna (Oslo) County, Norway, 19 December 1884 to Carl Knutsson Blom and Elisabet Johannesdotter. He emigrated from Norway and arrived in Port Huron, Michigan, in April 1899 on the ship Tunisian (Allen Line). He worked in Washington as a shingle sawyer at the mill owned by John and Henry Horn who were witnesses on his naturalization papers and wedding. He married Jennie Allegra Montague 9 March 1921 at Tacoma, Pierce, Washington. Witnesses were Henry Horn (millowner) and Bertha Whitney (Jennie's sister). On 8 March 1921 he filed his intention for naturalization at Tacoma. He petitioned for naturalization and his name change 8 September 1926. His naturalization was granted 27 December 1926.
