Obituary from "The Centre Democrat" newspaper on April 29, 1915. RECENT DEATHS: James V. GAULT, a native of Centre County, died Sunday, April 25th, at his home in Beccaria,Clearfield County, aged 72 years, 2 mo and 11 days. Deceased was a brother of the late Samuel Gault, the well know carpenter and contractor who died in Bellefonte about eight years ago. He was a veteran of the Civil War and enlisted in Co. E, 1st Reg. Penna Reserve Calvalry, the company having been recruited in Centre Co. Mr. Gault served in that regiment from Aug 1861 to Aug 1865. He was wounded a number of times, and during an engagement at Brandy Station, was captured and taken to Gen. Stewart's headquarters. Later the same day, he escaped and returned to the Union Lines with the sergeant's horse, saddle, bridle, arms and hat. Mr. Gault was known as a great hunter and had different hand to hand conflict with wounded deer and bear. He held the record of getting five bear in one day.
