John Douglas Bemo, most commonly known as "Doug", died Thursday, December 20, 2007 at Pleasant Valley Health Care Center. He was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma, to Leon Hall and Harriet Lucretia (Webb) Bemo on November 27, 1922. Doug was registered in the Creek Nation, as he was one quarter Creek Indian. Siblings were Jack Eugene, Harry Douglas, and Naoma Madge.
During his life he worked at a number of jobs. He was employed at a telegraph office and the telephone company. He was also a candy maker at Griffin's, an electrician, and a preacher. Generally, though, he was mostly known as a master electrician, working for several companies around Muskogee as well as out of state. Near the end of his professional life he was the Muskogee electrical inspector. It was not unusual for Doug to put in a forty hour week as an electrician, wire houses in the evenings, take his boys fishing or hunting on Saturday and serve in the Church on Sunday. . . . all the while managing to feed his family out of his garden. Of course those boys weeded in the garden and learned to do electrical work with him.
He was married to Doris Whaley on June 6, 1942 and to this union were born two boys; Alan Douglas and Gary Paul.
From 1942 to 1946 Doug served in the United States Air Force. After his discharge he became a Christian at Boulevard Christian Church and attended Ozark Bible College for two years around 1950. After this education Doug was a part-time and full-time preacher for much of his life. He preached at Riverside Christian Church, Leesville Christian in Leesville, Louisiana, Farmington Christian Church in Farmington, New Mexico, Okay Christian Church, Boynton Christian Church, and York Street Christian in Muskogee.
Doug's hobbies were hunting, fishing, beekeeping, woodworking, and gardening. For a time he was the president of the Bee Keeper's Association in Muskogee. Though we might call these "hobbies", Doug approached them in a way that they brought food to the table and money in the pocket.
On September 22, 1975 Doug and Dorothy were married and lived on Anthony Street. They had a huge flower and vegetable garden, from which they shared much produce. Once Doug won a county wide gardening contest. For most of their lives together they were members of Muskogee Church of Christ.
He was preceded by his first wife, Doris Bemo, and one son, Gary Paul Bemo. Survivors are his wife, Dorothy Bemo of Muskogee; son and daughter-in-law, Alan Douglas and Janet Bemo of Joplin, MO, six grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, at Muskogee Church of Christ with Mr. Kevin Stewart officiating. Interment will follow in Greenhill Cemetery.
Funeral service arrangements are under the direction of Foster-Petering Funeral Home.
