OXFORD - Dr. Jon Franklin "Shine" Meek Jr., 68, died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford. He was a graduate of Mississippi College in Clinton. He attended the New Orleans Theological Seminary and graduated from Golden Gate Seminary in California. His first church to pastor was Bethany Baptist Church in Enid. He was director of missions for the Baptist Convention of New York and worked for the American Bible Society in New York City. His first mission church was Calvary Baptist Church in Matawan, N.J. After serving as pastor of a number of churches in Louisiana, he retired as head pastor of Salem Baptist Church in Apex, N.C.

He served as interim pastor of North Oxford Baptist Church and Calvary Baptist Church in Oxford and Slayden Baptist Church in Marshall County. He was the first pastor of Faith Baptist Church in Oxford. He was formerly director of missions for the Lafayette Marshall Baptist Association, and he served on the Board of Directors for the North American Mission Board.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today at North Oxford Baptist Church in Oxford with Dr. Gary Richardson and Charles King officiating. Burial will be in North Oxford Cemetery. Waller Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Lola E. Meek of Oxford; two sons, Jon Michael Meek of Jacksonville, Fla., and Gary Wyndell Meek of Snellville, Ga.; two brothers, Edwin E. Meek of Oxford and Larry D. Meek of Chicago; seven grandchildren.

Visitation will continue from 9:30 to 10 a.m. today at the church.

Memorials may be made to the North Oxford Baptist Church or the Baptist Convention of New York.
