John was the fifth of five children born to Solomon and Prudence (Hawley) Gowey in Arlington, Bennington, Vermont.
He married Fanny Galetsy Judson on Oct 7, 1817 in Arlington and together they had 10 children. (Clarissa, Galetsy, Hartland Duportal, Arvilla Wright, Rolland,
Florian, Ossian Judson, Lavancia, John Fletcher, and Floretta Hermione.)
In 1821 the Gowey's moved to western New York, in 1837 they moved to Ohio and in 1851 John and Fanny moved their family to Brighton, Washington, Iowa where they lived until their deaths.

(It should be noted that the family cemetery where John is buried is now a part of Lake Darling State Park)
