Mary (her name was Marie changed to Mary when she became a U.S. citizen) was born to Jan & Marie Theresa (Gebhard) Gernert. They were immigrants from Hovorany, South Moravia in the Austrian Empire, what is now called the Czech Republic.

She married 1st John Albert Collins on 22 Mar 1921 in DeSoto Parish, Louisiana. They had 5 children:

James Willard, twins Doris & Dorothy, Evelyn Frances and Richard Franklin Sr.

Mary and John were divorced on 5 Oct 1939.

She married 2nd Royce Miller.
