Wanda Jean Brown was born March 25, 1925 in Bentonville, Benton County, Arkansas, the daughter of Edwin D. "Doc" Brown and Winnie Ann Crabtree. She preferred to be called Jean her whole life.


Wanda Jean attended Pea Ridge, Benton County, Arkansas public school, graduating on April 14, 1938.


Wanda Jean Brown married Paul Vaughn on March 10, 1943 in Pea Ridge, Benton County, Arkansas.


Wanda Jean Brown Vaughn and Paul Vaughn had 4 children in their 51 year wonderful long marriage together, until Paul's passing sadly in 1994:

-David Michael Vaughn, born Jan.7, 1950 in Huntington Park, Los Angeles County, CA.

-Craig Kentley Vaughn, born Aug. 29, 1951 in Nevada, Vernon County, MO.

-Avis Gayle Vaughn, born June 4, 1956 in Nevada, Vernon County, MO.

-Eric Randall Vaughn, born Dec.3, 1958 in Nevada, Vernon County, MO.


During 1942-1950's, Wanda Jean was employed at various companies in California:

-S. H.Kress Co., located in San Pedro, CA Jean was a clerk in charge of the glasswares department.

-Safeway Grocery, located in Livermore, CA, Jean was a checker.

-Betty Brooks Plant, located at 6031 Maywood Ave.in Huntington Park, CA Jean worked at a clothing manufacturer assembly line setting zippers.


In 1950's Jean and Paul moved to El Dorado Springs, MO when their son, David was a baby.

Their son, Craig was born in Aug.1951 in Nevada,MO. Paul decided he wanted to begin his TV repair shop in downtown El Dorado Springs, MO. Jean stayed home caring for the family and home. Their daughter, Avis was born in 1956 in Nevada, MO. And then 1958, Eric was born in Nevada, MO. El Dorado Springs, MO had no hospital, and Nevada, MO was nearest city for hospital.


After the children grew up more, Jean decided she wanted to take over ownership of her mother's fabric shop, Brown's Yardage located on Main St. in El Dorado Springs, MO. Jean and her husband, Paul purchased the shop, and renamed the fabric shop, The Yardage Shop and kept the shop at same location. Jean completed a Dale Carnegie Course in Effective Speaking & Human Relations, and was certified on Jan.15, 1963. Jean received a certificate for beginners typing course completed on April 29th, 1965 in El Dorado Springs, MO from the University of Missouri Extension Council. Paul and Jean closed the Yardage shop, Vaughn's TV Sales and Service shop, and sold the KESM AM/FM radio station in El Dorado Springs, MO in 1971 before moving their family to Fayetteville, AR. Jean opened a new fabric dry goods shop, Fayette Fabrics at 1702 N.College Ave.,next door to Paul's first Radio Shack franchise electronic retail store, located at 1700 N.College Ave. in Fayetteville, AR. Fayette Fabrics later operated in same location as 3 different Tandy craft franchise's, American Handicrafts, Tandy Leather, and Merribee Needlearts--calling the total store as Craft World. Jean's daughter, Avis worked side by side always helping Jean manage, buying, and sales in her shop. Later the American Handicraft and Merribee Needleart companies closed in Ft. Worth, TX. And the Tandy Leather company was bought by The Leather Factory Company. But Jean kept the store similar in variety by buying from several supply vendors until about 2012. Her husband, Paul and her owned 5 local Radio Shack franchise/dealerships, located in Fayetteville, Springdale, Rogers, and Bentonville AR, most managed by family members. Jean attended a 3 day seminar course of the Murray Eckles Technique and was certified March 13, 1980.


Wanda Jean Brown Vaughn enjoyed hobbies of sewing, quilting, embroidery, needlepoint, and painting. She enjoyed going to her yearly Dallas Craft Market. When she was a child, she taught herself to use a sewing machine. She prided herself in being a good seamstress in sewing her family clothing. Jean enjoyed piece hand-stitched quilts, and her favorite design was the flower garden design. She admired her mother-in-law, Lula Mae Vaughn's quilting. Some of Jean's favorite vocal singers were Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Benny Goodman, Jim Reeves, and Marty Robbins. She enjoyed going to see movies when she lived in California, and one movie she saw was White Christmas when that movie first came to the screen. She once saw Red Skelton, a famous clown, perform during a live stage performance during that time in her life. Red Skelton did 2 performance's, one for recording and one for fun.

Jean enjoyed visiting gardens on vacations. Her favorite flower was the pansy. She said they had faces.

Jean also made great homemade cobbler apple pie, made from the 2 apple trees on the family home when they lived in El Dorado Springs, MO during the 1960's.

Jean, Paul, and their four children always went on many memorable family vacations together while the children were younger going to various National Parks and museums in the summertime. Jean enjoyed visiting with her Oregon cousins, Vera Rush and Eileen Robertson many times, and loved her visits to the Oregon coastline together. Jean enjoyed the many trips her husband, Paul, her children, and her won through their years with Radio Shack Corporate. Some of the trips they traveled together were Spain, Vienna, England, Mexico, Australia, Hawaii, Alaska, Carribean, and Disneyworld. All of Jean and Paul's family worked in the many family retail stores they owned as owners, managers, and salespersons throughout their lives till their retirement.


Jean was a member of the United Methodist Church on W.Sycamore St.in Fayetteville, AR.


Wanda Jean Brown Vaughn was married to her husband, Paul Vaughn over 50 years. Paul became ill in 1992 from prostrate cancer, and Jean chose to care for him herself. Paul passed away on Dec. 31, 1994 from prostate cancer at the Springdale Memorial Hospital in Springdale AR, Jean was very saddened. The strain was so much, that her health started failing. Jean enjoyed driving to Kansas City, MO often and playing slots at The Station Casino. One of her favorite slots to play was the flaming 7's quarter machines. She enjoyed her friends, Faye and Ainslee Fowler company while in Kansas City. Sometimes Faye would go with her to play, and she also went on a family trip with Jean and her mother to visit her cousins in Oregon. Jean had at least 3 strokes, and she was discovered to have dementia not long afterwards. The last few years of her life Jean needed more help taking care of her life requiring her to be placed in a health care facility in Fayetteville, AR.


Wanda Jean Brown Vaughn sadly passed away on March 20, 2012 at the age of 86 at Katherine's Place in Fayetteville, Washington County, Arkansas. Jean is buried in the Pea Ridge Cemetery at Pea Ridge, Benton County, AR.
