Olga Dorfner Schoenhut was born on 30 May 1897 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Anton Louis Dorfner (1857–1943) and Emelia Valetton Dorfner (1864–1943).
She started swimming in a club in 1914, at the age of 16. As a competitive American swimmer, she held United States records in five categories! Olga was US champion between 1916-1918 in the 50 yd, 100 yd, 220 yd, and 440 yd freestyle events. After winning the national championships in 1916, she was presented with a vase featuring her portrait. In 1918 she became the first American woman to break World swimming records in the 200-meter and 100-yard freestyle events. She did not participate in 1916 Summer Olympics due to World War I, and then due to childbirth in 1920.
Olga married Harry Edison Schoenhut (1 Oct 1889 –1 Sep 1952) in 1919. They had two children, a son Harry Edison Schoenhut (1921 – 2000) and a daughter, Phyllis Olga Schoenhut Rountree (1923-1998).
In 1970 Olga Dofner Schoenhut was inducted to the International Swimming Hall of Fame, Fort Lauderdale, Florida and she personally donated her championship vase to the museum of the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1970.
She passed away on 7 March 1983.
